![]() These days most people prefer Brotherhood and downplay the 2003 adaptation but I strongly disagree with that. Tried them out but just too much of a vile for vile sake factor, whereas the show makes it shocking, fun but visceral like it is.įullmetal Alchemist was initially released while the comic was still being put out so they had to come out with an original ending. Plus yeah, The Boys would NOT be nearly as good as it is if they did it like the comics. Nothing can be 100%, but FMAB is still "perfect" in my book if that makes sense. Use the remaining extra time to let one or two scenes fully adapt from the manga.Īnyway, FMAB is still my 2nd favorite animated show behind Avatar. Have the Yoki episode and expand Ishval to the proper 2 episodes it should've been (though I do love the move of Scar's backstory). Give us some more anime-only scenes of Hughes, have him go in the end-of-cour finale episode 14. In my ideal world FMAB would've been 70 episodes. Same with Tucker being much bigger in 2003 cause he lives. Both very important roles but different in meaning to the whole overall story. In 2003 Hughes is a 2nd Act Mid-Point Heartbreak twist. I think it also comes down to what is the purpose of the characters in the story. You hit that moment it's literally a completely different show from what you've seen prior in 2003 all the way to the end of episode 64. I would highly recommend getting through to episode 15 of Brotherhood. If anything the Nina episode in FMAB is actually one of the SLOWEST paced episodes, adapting a single chapter of FMA in one episode. 2003, for lack of a better word, filler-ed and stretched out the time of those two things and made them more important to the story it wanted to tell after they realized they were gonna catch up to the manga if they didn't break off and do their own thing. They aren't rushed at all in comparison to the mangahood story, 2003 just has a much SHORTER story overall. Interesting parts being those two things were very faithfully adapted timewise in comparison to the manga. It felt really condensed and the more emotional moments from the original like the deaths of Nina and Alexander and Maes Hughes didn’t hit me hard on Brotherhood And there was literally only six years between the starts of the two shows, so there wasn’t that much time before the newer, “complete” series came out for additional viewers to discover the older series. Plus most new viewers are probably only going to watch one of the two, and the reputation of Brotherhood makes it the more obvious options, so the amount of people who have seen Brotherhood and not the original continues to grow. Brotherhood would be perfect if they had spent some more episodes on the overlapping parts. But the part after the divergence in Brotherhood is quite long, and I think it’s just better in plot and storytelling so that it overshadowed the older show. And the pacing of the episodes where it and FMA:B have the same story is about twice as slow, which is definitely the better pacing. This article is going to focus on the first anime, Fullmetal Alchemist, which ran from 2003 to 2004.It was good until they ran out of manga source material and then it went a bit off the rails. There is a lot of debate among fans regarding whether the first or second adaptation is better as there are major differences between the two. If you are a fan of well-thought-out fantasy stories that tackle complex issues such as living with a disability, war, corruption, and how harsh living with your mistakes can be, this one is for you.Īs mentioned earlier, Fullmetal Alchemist was popular enough to garner two different animated adaptations. ![]() The lore and history of Amestris, their home country, is expansive and detailed and there is a large cast of deep and complex characters there to support the boys on their quest. The manga follows their journey searching for the Philosopher’s Stone, an alchemical compound that is so powerful that it can bypass the normal laws of alchemy and get their bodies back. They attempt alchemy’s ultimate taboo and try to bring her back at the cost of one brother’s entire body and another’s arm (Ed also loses his leg bringing Al’s soul back). In a world where alchemy is a viable and complex science, two young brothers, Ed and Al, lose their mother to illness. This manga, which was written by Hiromu Arakawa, was so popular that it has received two anime series, multiple video games, some card games, action figures, light novels, and a Netflix adaptation – not bad at all. Fullmetal Alchemist was an awesome manga that ran from 2001-2010.
